An element is one of a class of substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means.

An atom is the smallest component of an element. 

The atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus, the elemental symbol is a short way to say what the element is and the atomic mass is the weighted average of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Neutrons are in the nucleus to stop protons from repelling each other, like the same sides of magnets.

 You can find atoms anywhere in the world. In fact the world is made out of atoms!
